Wisdom Teeth Removal in Vaughan: What the Assessment Tells You

Do your wisdom teeth actually need to come out?

Not always. A wisdom tooth that is upright, healthy and cleanable with a toothbrush gets left alone. The teeth we recommend removing are the ones causing trouble already, or clearly headed there.

So some assessments end with nothing needing work. If your wisdom teeth are behaving, you book a cleaning and go home.

The decision rule is short. Can you clean it, is it sitting in a sensible position, and is the gum around it calm? Three yeses and there is no case for taking it out. A no is where the conversation about wisdom teeth removal starts.

What makes a wisdom tooth a problem

Trouble starts when the tooth is impacted, meaning it cannot come through properly. That happens in three shapes.

  1. Angled into its neighbour, pushing against the tooth in front of it.
  2. Trapped half-erupted under a flap of gum, so food and bacteria sit underneath where no brush reaches.
  3. Buried entirely, with bacteria collecting around it.

Those are the teeth that produce pain, swelling and infections that keep coming back. They feel fine for months, flare up, settle, then flare up again.

If a wisdom tooth is swollen and throbbing right now, do not wait for a routine assessment slot. That is an emergency visit. Dental infections do not wait politely.

What the assessment and panoramic X-ray show

The first visit is a look and an X-ray, not a procedure. The panoramic X-ray is the part that matters: it shows the shape of the roots, where the nerve runs, and how each tooth sits in the bone.

Root shape and position are what the panoramic X-ray is read for.

Two wisdom teeth can look identical from the outside and be nothing alike underneath. Short straight roots and a tooth hooked at an angle are two different jobs, and the X-ray is where that difference shows up.

You see the X-ray on the screen. We tell you which teeth we would leave, which we would recommend taking out, and why. If this is your first visit, the new patient page covers what to bring.

The office is at 2100 Steeles Ave W, Suite 203-204, in Concord, Vaughan. Second floor, elevator access, free plaza parking outside the door.

Which cases do we refer out?

Some wisdom teeth are not done here. Very complex cases are referred to a specialist, and you are told that at the assessment rather than on the day of the procedure.

General anaesthesia is referred out too. The full list of what leaves this office is short: general anaesthesia, very complex wisdom teeth, very complex orthodontics and complex paediatric cases. Everything else we handle ourselves.

Being referred says something about the tooth, not about you. The X-ray showed something that belongs with someone who does that work all day. You will know which category you are in before you agree to anything.

Is sedation extra, and how is cost quoted?

Removal is quoted at the assessment, after the panoramic X-ray, because the number depends on how the tooth sits. A simple removal and a surgical one are not the same job. You get a written quote before you decide anything.

Nitrous oxide sedation is included in that quoted number if you want it, rather than billed on top. It is available in house for any procedure and you do not need a referral for it.

So one quote covers the removal and the sedation together. If you would rather have it done with local anaesthetic only, that is fine.

What recovery actually looks like

Removals are done under full local anaesthetic. You are awake, the area is numb, and simple removals take minutes rather than the hour people brace themselves for.

Soft foods for about a week is most of the aftercare.

Most people are back at school or work in two to three days, eating soft foods for about a week. Complex removals can take a little longer to settle, and you are told that beforehand rather than finding out on day four.

You leave with written aftercare, not a verbal list to memorise while your lip is still numb. Someone checks in afterwards, and if something feels wrong before then, you call.

What is dry socket and how do you avoid it?

Dry socket is when the blood clot that forms in the socket gets dislodged. That clot is doing a job, and the first few days are when it is most vulnerable.

Three habits account for most of the risk, and dropping them drops your odds substantially:

  • No straws.
  • No smoking.
  • No vigorous rinsing.

For those first days, that is the whole list.

Is there a best age, and what does coverage pay?

Late teens to mid-twenties is the ideal window. Roots are still short and the bone is more forgiving, which generally makes the whole thing simpler. That is why so many people have theirs out around the end of high school or during university.

Missing that window is not a problem. Removal is done safely at any age when a tooth is causing trouble.

On money: most insurance plans and CDCP cover extractions. Every insurer is billed directly, so you pay only the portion your plan does not cover, and the written quote still comes first. The practice serves Vaughan, Concord, Thornhill, Woodbridge, Maple, Richmond Hill, North York and Toronto, with free plaza parking at the door.

Common questions about wisdom teeth in Vaughan

What does wisdom tooth removal cost in Vaughan?

It is quoted at the assessment, after the panoramic X-ray, because the cost depends on how the tooth sits: simple through to surgical. You get a written quote before you decide anything.

Is sedation extra?

No. Nitrous oxide sedation is included in the quoted price if you want it, rather than billed on top. It is available in house for any procedure, with no referral needed.

Are there cases you do not do here?

Yes. Very complex wisdom teeth are referred to a specialist, as is anything needing general anaesthesia. You are told at the assessment, not on the day.

Does CDCP cover wisdom tooth removal?

Most plans and CDCP cover extractions. We bill every insurer directly and you pay only what the plan does not cover.

Book an assessment

If you have been told your wisdom teeth should come out, start with the assessment and the X-ray. You leave knowing which teeth we would leave alone, which we would remove, whether your case is one we refer out, and what the written quote says.

Request an appointment and the front desk confirms the time with you by phone. If a wisdom tooth is hurting right now, call instead of waiting on a form.
